01 - LVH Vasu Hotel ~ Kanakapura

Nestled in Kanakapura Road, Hotel Vasu is famous for its delectable Masala Dosa. Though it is a self-service restaurant, yet it’s worth waiting for your turn, to taste crispy roasted Masala Dosa. The icing on the cake is, that they add ghee, instead of oil, to make it, crispier. This makes, it even more delicious. Apart from Masala Dosa, Coffee is very popular, in this restaurant. This hotel is situated 60kms from Bangalore. You even get Idli, Vada, and other breakfast items. This hotel was started in 1983, by Mr. Ramachandra Upadhaya. Initially, this hotel did not, have any branches, and was located on MG Road, in Kanakapura. However, recently a branch was opened, at KNS Circle, in Kanakapura. Presently, the one in KNS Circle is, run and managed by Mr. Janardhan (Son of the founder Ramachandra Upadhya). 

 

Tip – As it is a well-known restaurant, it will always, be full. Though, there are a few seating arrangements made, be prepared to stand and eat…

02 - Kotte Idly mane ~ Kanakapura

Nestled, in Kanakapura this, Idli hotel is quite acclaimed in Kanakapura taluk. Situated, at 60kms from Bangalore, this Kote Idli restaurant is so famous, that people throng at this eatery, to savor the soft and hot Idlis, served with chutney.  Established, 50yrs ago the present owner, is maintaining the same taste and standards. Hence, this Idli joint has become, very well-known. Though these Idlis are most sought, you can have these Idlis, at a very pocket-friendly price of 2 rupees 50 paise per Idli. The present owner, of this Idli hotel, is Mr. Ramachandra. 

 

 

According to him, the founder of this hotel was his father Sri. Sheshappanavaru, and would sell 10 Idlis, for an amount of 1 rupee, i.e. 10 paise, per Idli, in 1972-73. Mr. Ramachandra is said to have been, helping his father to prepare Idlis, during that tenure, and later, took over this hotel business in, 1984. From 1984, he has been running and managing it. Unlike 50yrs ago, when his father used to make Idlis, in a vessel, Mr. Ramachandra is preparing Idlis in an Idli steamer, to make it faster, and easier. He further said, “His Idlis are cheap and best.”

 

 

The chutney, they serve is thin, in consistency, and will be very zesty because of the dried red chilis, added to it. Instead of adding mustard, and other spices as the seasoning, they just add coriander and curry leaves. This means, no oil will be, added in making this, yummy fiery chutney. Mr. Ramachandra gets help, from his son Ananth, and daughter-in-law Nirosha, in sales. All the cooking work is done, by Mr. Ramachandra only. They serve, both thin, as well as, thick chutney with these hot and soft Idlis.

03- Chiblu Idly hotel in Halaguru

Situated 80kms from Bangalore, Chiblu (Bamboo Basket) Idlis are available in a hotel called Babu Hotel. This restaurant is nestled in a village of Halagur taluk. As the Idlis are made in a bamboo basket, it came to be known as Bamboo Basket Idli, or Chiblu (Bamboo basket) Idli. For the last 50yrs this village in Halagur, has been making the soft, steaming hot Idlis, using the wood fire. 

 

 

The owners here are Mr. Babu and his brother Mr. Shivu. As per him, this elegant hotel was started by his grandfather. Renowned for its delectable soft Idlis, this place is visited by, famous Kannada film actor Shivarajakumar, thrice. As per the present owners, this restaurant had no name when it was established. However, when he took charge, it got registered as Babu Hotel. 

 

 

People from various parts of Karnataka come here to taste this unique Idli. Mr. Babu, even said, formerly there wasn’t any steamer, hence the Idlis would be prepared, in a vessel, which would take a long duration. Nonetheless, in the present scenario, the Idli steamer, has come in handy to make hot Idlis, within a short period. The timings of this eatery are, from 7 AM to 11 AM. Apart from Bamboo Basket Idlis, this hotel also proffers Ghee Dosa, Khaali Dosa, Masala Dosa, and Plain Dosa. The special thing, about these Dosa variants, is a dollop of butter they add, on top of the Dosas. 

 

 

These brothers even sell Chitranna (Lemon Rice), and crispy Masala Vada, prepared by their mother here. When you taste these Bamboo Basket Idlis, you will get a mild aroma of bamboo. Along with the Idli, they provide butter, and chutney. So, the soft Idli, with a dash of this chutney and butter, tastes divine. Unlike the regular, coconut chutney, they proffer chutney made of coconut, fried gram, and dried red chilies. For, both Dosa and Idli, you get the same kind of chutney.

04 - Poli Hotel in Halaguru

Poli Hotel, in Halaguru was established more than 30yrs ago. This bistro is famous for its Mini Ghee Masala Dosa. A dollop of butter, on top of this mini Masala Dosa, gives it an exquisite taste. Dosa here tastes so delicious, it melts the instant you eat. Though it is a small eatery, many Kannada movie actors like Dhruva Sarja,  Shivarajakumar, etc… have paid a visit to this hotel. Poli Hotel is run and managed by the founder’s son Nagaraj, along with his grandson Nagendra. Here, they serve approximately 500 customers daily. The food available here is priced nominally. However, the information about the founder of this hotel remains unknown.

05 - Sri Shiva darshana Hotel ~ Bidadi

Well-known as Bidadi Thatte Idli restaurant, this is one of the reputed Idli joints, amongst the travelers who frequent this route. Situated 40kms from Bangalore, this hotel is one of the many Bidadi Thatte Idli hotels in Bidadi. The steamy and soft Thatte Idli here is served with a Masala Vada, along with vegetable sagu, for a price of Rs. 50/- If you want a dollop of butter, on your Thatte Idlis, you need to pay Rs. 25/- more… The owner of this Thatte Idli eatery is Mr. Shashi Kumar. According to him, this restaurant was established in 1950, by his greatest grandfather, and he is from the fifth generation, who is running this hotel business. 

 

He further said, to maintain hygiene, the Idli batter is prepared at home, by his wife and some helpers. Also, the entire hotel is said to have been run by him, his son, his brother’s son, and his sister’s son. Apart from this, Mr. Shashi Kumar said, the Masala Vadas are prepared by his brother Mr. Renuka Prasad. The success behind this hotel business, as per Mr. Shashi Kumar, is not only the quality maintained, for ages, but also because of customer interaction. The chutney, they serve with Idli, is a mixture of fried gram, dried red chili, tamarind, coriander, mint leaves, and jaggery. They serve Bombay Sagu, made of potato, onion, and spices, instead of palya, as the eatery will always be filled with customers. Not only Thatte Idli, but Masala Vada, is equally famous in this hotel. 

 

Amongst the celebrities who have visited this hotel, Kannada Thespian Actor Dr. Rajakumar, had visited this hotel, to savor the delicious Thatte Idli here. Owner, Mr. Shashi Kumar’s son, Rakesh looks after the billing section. On the whole, Thatte Idlis, and Masala Vada, you get here, look very delectable.

06 - Hotel Sri Janardhana ~ Ramanagaram

Hotel Shri Janardhana, in Ramanagara Taluk is renowned for, the sumptuous Masala Dosa and luscious Mysore Pak. It is a 95yr old restaurant, well-known as Mysore Pak Hotel, established in 1926. The founder, of this hotel, was Sri Janardhan, in whose name, this hotel business started. Later, his son Sri Parameshwariah took over, this hotel, at an age of 19yrs. Presently, his son Mr. Prashanth, and daughter-in-law Gayathri, are the owners of this hotel. 

 

According to Mr. Prashanth, his grandfather Sri Janardhan was only preparing Mysore Pak and other sweets. Prashanth, even said, during his grandfather, and father’s tenure, Mysore Pak was being made manually, nevertheless, now it is made with a machine. As, they are following the age-old recipe of the founder, and also maintaining, the same standards, Mysore Pak, we get in this restaurant, is very much acclaimed, and this restaurant, is thronged by many food lovers.  

 

The ghee-filled Mysore Pak, you get here is so delicious, and gooey, it won’t take much time to melt in your mouth, the moment you eat it. Located, at a distance of 50kms from Bangalore, your visit to this hotel will be, all worth it. As per the owners, they add gram flour, ample quantity of ghee, a pinch of turmeric, for the color, and the perfect measure of sugar, to make this, marvelous Mysore Pak. Apart from Mysore Pak, you even get succulent Badam Halwa, made out of ghee, Benne Muruku, made out of butter, crispy ghee Masala Dosa, soft Idli, and crunchy Vada that, tastes divine.
