Shringeri Sharada Peetham, is an ancient pilgrim place, established by the philosopher Saint, Sri Adi Shankaracharya, in the 8th-century AD. Sri Adi Shankaracharya was the preacher of Advaita philosophy. Situated, on the banks of River Tunga, this religious place attracts hundreds of devotees. Shringeri Mutt is an ancient picturesque temple, enveloped by lush greenery. Sringeri Mutt is the first, amongst the four Amnaya Peethas, which means the throne of the Vedas, established over twelve centuries ago in honor of the sacred traditions of Sanatana Dharma. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, who is the Goddess of Knowledge.

Situated in the district of Chikmagalur, this pilgrimage is very serene, and peaceful. During the time of Sri Adi Shankaracharya, he had installed a sandalwood idol, of Goddess Sharadamba Devi, in the standing posture. However, Vijayanagara rulers and Sri Jagadguru Vidyaranya installed a seated gold statue of Goddess Shardamba Devi, in the 14th century.

According to a belief, Lord Shiva gifted the crystal Chandramouleeshwara Linga to Sri Adi Shankaracharya. The Linga can still be visited, and the Chandramouleeshwara Pooja is performed for the Linga, every Friday at 8:30 PM. It is even said that Goddess Sharadambika is the incarnation of Goddess Saraswati, who came to Earth as Ubhaya Bharathi. It is a common faith that by worshiping her, one can receive blessings of Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva, and Lord Vishnu along with Goddess Parvati, Goddess Lakshmi, and Goddess Saraswati Devi.

Navratri festival is the major festival celebrated in this temple. There are around 40 temples in Sringeri, including Sri Sharada Peetham.
