Sharana Basaveshwara Temple – Sharana Basaveshwara temple, is an ancient shrine situated in Kalburgi (Gulbarga) district, North-East Karnataka. This temple is dedicated to a renowned 12th century Lingayat Saint Sri Sharana Basaveshwara. He was an acclaimed religious teacher and philosopher, who was known for his Dasoha i.e, giving is earning, and Kayak i.e, an advancement of the Karma doctrine – “You have the right to perform the work assigned to you. You have no right to ‘demand’ the fruits of your labor.”  

 

The temple houses the samadhi, of Sri Sharana Basaveshwara, in the sanctum sanctorum. There is even a lake adjacent to the temple, which is a popular tourist attraction. The major temple event is a historic car festival. This event will be witnessed by people, across the country and abroad. On this occasion, people will also have a rare opportunity, to have a glimpse of the silver plate, i.e. Prasada Battala, used by the saint. The Jatra/festivity is organized, to commemorate the death anniversary of the Saint. 

 

During the Jatra time, devotees can also look at the Linga Sajjike which is the cover used to hold the Linga made of sandalwood. People of this place offer their portion of the harvest, during the Jatra time, along with conducting a cattle fair every year. 

 

The temple has amazing architecture, which dates back to the 12th century. The carvings have patterns of Garuda, Parrots, Flowers, and Elephants. Sharana Basaveshwara Temple is also known as Sabhamandap and consists of around 36 arches along with numerous pillars that add to the beauty of the temple.
