Melukote Yoga Narasimha Temple – Melukote Yoga Narasimha temple, is one of the quintessential pilgrimages, in Pandavapura taluk’s Melukote town, of the Mandya district. Melukote is located, 51kms from Mysore and 133kms from Bangalore. Yoga Narasimha temple is nestled on the hill, amidst picturesque landscapes. It is believed that the statue of Lord Yoga Narasimha, was installed by Prahlada himself. He was the son of a demon king, Hiranyakashipu, who was killed by Lord Narasimha, for his misdeeds. The golden crown of this Lord is said to have been bestowed by the Mysore King Krishnaraja Wodeyar III. The hill on which the Yoga Narasimha shrine is situated, is at an altitude of 5,830.05ft, above sea level.
This ancient temple is acclaimed for its splendiferous architecture, placid environs, and religious significance. Abode of Lord Narasimha/Bhagawan Vishnu temple, you can see Lord Narasimha in a sitting posture, with the Yogapatta. The temple is considered to be, one of the seven pilgrimage places, dedicated to Lord Narasimha. Apart from regular poojas, performed daily, Narasimha Jayanthi is the most popular festivity, celebrated every year. On this day, special poojas will be offered to the Lord, and hundreds of devotees, throng this temple.
Established during the reign of the Hoysala kingdom, the shrine has a colossal drum, that was donated by Mysore Emperor Tippu Sultan, and an exquisite bell has been presented, by Mysore Parakalamatha. To reach this monumental temple, you need to climb around 300 steps. The artistic carvings on the pillars, and overall architecture of this temple, are marvelous. It gives a sort of thrill, to scale these 300 steps. It is not a difficult climb, however, some steps are unevenly placed. But, once you reach the hilltop, it will be like an achievement.
Not only trekkers but even travelers also, enjoy clambering this hill. It gives a sort of positive vibe when you enter this temple premises. The vista from this hill is astounding. It is believed that this temple finds reference in the Vedic literature, that dates back to thousands of years. The Iyengar style, Puliogare, and Sakkare Pongal, you get as prasadam in this temple, will be so delicious, you wouldn’t mind having it for a second time.
