Mahadeva Temple – Mahadeva temple, is situated in the town of Itagi, in Koppal district. This temple dates back to 1112 AD and was built by Mahadeva, a commander in the army of the Western Chalukya King, Vikramaditya VI. The Mahadeva Temple was constructed based on the general plan of the Amrutheshwara Temple, at Annigeri. The preceding deity, of this temple, is Lord Shiva. The sculptures, the carvings on the walls, the pillars, and the towers, in this temple are designed, in the style of Western, Chalukyan architecture.
The Mahadeva temple is officially protected as a national monument by the Archaeological Survey of India. The entire temple is said to have been built using Soapstone. This temple has been described as “Devalaya Chakravarti”, meaning ‘Emperor among temples. The garbhagriha, or the sanctum sanctorum, housed the Shiva Linga. The ceilings of this shrine are excellently carved. There are more than sixty pillars in this temple. Facing towards the East direction, this temple’s garbhagriha’s shikhara was partly damaged, on the top portion. Hence, it is renovated, by replacing a modern element.
The outer walls of the temple are almost plain. However, it has some minimalistic carvings and a few geometric designs. The ceiling of this temple is very intricately engraved and looks splendid. There is also a stepped well, and an open pillared portico, in this shrine.
