Sri Chamrajeshwara Temple ~ Chamarajanagara

This religious place, is one of the antiquated shrines, situated in the Chamarajanagara district. Established by the Mysore Emperor Sri Krishnaja Wodeyar Bahaddur III, this pilgrim place dates back to the 10th century (1826). The Emperor not only renamed the birthplace of his dear Father Sri Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar, as Chamarajanagara but also built Lord Chamarajeshwara temple, along with Goddess Kempananjamba Devi temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, and Goddess Parvati Devi, this temple celebrates yearly Jaatre/festivities, in the month of Ashada, and Girija Kalyana in June. The temple contains the Shivling, made/brought from Sringeri, and was built with the blessings of Adi Shankaracharya, founder of the Advaita Siddhanta.

 

Constructed in the Dravidian and Hoysala, style of architecture comprises an array of paintings, of various Gods and Goddesses, adorning the walls of this temple. These designs are quite stunning, which entice thousands of devotees and art lovers, to the temple. The temple is famous for the big patios with a golden apex. The chanting of the Bilvashtakam mantras, in the praise of Lord Shiva, reverberates from the temple, in the streets of Chamarajanagara. The Rajagopuram, which is 70ft, is a five-storeyed structure, with brass kalashas atop. Nandi idol made of concrete, encased with an iron shield is placed, right in front of Lord Shiva at the entrance.
