Kalpa ~ The door to Kinnaur Kailash trekking

Kalpa is a petite village, situated in the Sutlej valley, above Reckong Peo, in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. This village is acclaimed for its enchanting apple orchards. Apple is the major commercial crop of this village. The people of Kinnauri, follow Hinduism and Buddhism. There are even temples dedicated to, both Hindu and Buddhist Gods and Goddesses. Kalpa village is famous for its ancient temples. The view of the Sutlej river, which flows through mountain ranges and Chilgoza forests, is mesmerizing. Tourists have to stop-over at Reckong Peo to get their inner line permit to travel uphill to Spiti Valley, which is an archaic part of Tibet. 

 

From Spiti Valley, you can even have a view of magnificent Mt. Kailash, which changes color at different points in a day. The places of interest in and around Kalpa are Kothi Temple and The Chaka Meadows. Kalpa village is situated at an elevation of, 9051ft above sea level and takes 260kms from Shimla to reach this village. Kalpa was earlier, the district headquarters of Kinnaur. It takes 14kms, i.e. half-an-hour drive from Reckong Peo, to reach this village. 

 

Kalpa came into prominence in the wake of British Governor-General Lord Dalhousie’s visit in the 19th century. The Narayan-Nagini temple is well-known for its artistic architecture. Mt. Kailash which is located at an altitude of 19849.08ft, is very near to this village. The rising sunlight falling on the snowy peaks of Mt. Kailash, with crimson and golden light is worth watching. Sappini Fort

Sappini Fort – Sappini Fort, is the most popular spot in this village. Raja Padam Singh of Rampur built this ancient fort in 1869. This fort is enveloped with a splendid view of the Sutlej valley and is near Kalpa. The main tower has 7 floors creaking their way through life. You can find a grand Kali temple on the fifth floor, which has fine woodwork, and historical importance

 

Narayan Nagini Temple

Narayan-Nagini Temple – Narayan-Nagini temple is situated behind Kalpa Fort. This temple is constructed in Tibetian Pagoda style architecture and is placed atop the hills of Chini village. Goddess Durga Devi is the deity worshipped in this temple. The golden roof of this temple is so shiny, it is visible even from a far distance. This makes it easier for the devotees to find this temple.  

 

Chakka Trek

Chakka Trek: If you are an ardent trekker/hiker, this is one of the famous places, you need to visit. The trekking/hiking trail starts from Kalpa village and takes 2-3hrs to scale this 15,000ft mountain. The view around is so picturesque, you will treasure this memory for a lifetime. Make sure to be back before it’s dark so that, you can enjoy the journey in the midst of Sutlej valley and lake. Local guides are also available for help, on the spot.

Kothi Temple

Kothi Temple: Kothi temple is an abode of Goddess Chandika Devi. Situated amidst the mountain ranges, and deodar tree groves, this temple has an unusual architectural style and fine structure. A subtle gold idol of Goddess is enshrined in the sanctorium.
